The Next Generation
Like all great things it takes a long time to improve and iterate the next version of a solid well-liked product such as the Dori Block.
Finally, an opportunity presented itself nearly three years ago when Chris Bashford from CB Construction reached out to us. Engaged in extensive decorative dentil work, Chris frequently found himself improvising with timber scraps or whatever materials were at hand to adjust his line. Unfortunately, this makeshift approach often resulted in the projected course falling short of the desired extent, forcing him to settle for a compromise—a familiar situation encountered by many of us on construction sites, where “close enough” becomes an acceptable outcome.
Chris, having experienced this persistent issue firsthand, sought the expertise of BT Engineering. listening to his frustrations and his proposed solution. From there we spoke to several experienced bricklayers in England to see if they were facing the same issues with this type of work. It became evident that the issue was widespread and posed a significant inconvenience.
This innovation serves as the answer to the problem that Chris and countless others in the industry faced.

Let’s talk about the legendary DORI Block. This nifty tool is a game-changer for bricklayers, allowing them to run a string line from one vertical section to another without relying on the brickwork itself. It’s all about maintaining accuracy and precision without the hassle of continuously building up each corner. You see, this tool eliminates the need for that tedious process while delivering exceptional results.
Now, here’s a little history lesson for you. The Dori Block has become so widespread in the industry that its origins are often overlooked. It all started with our very own Bruce Thomas, affectionately known as Mr. BT, who fabricated the first Dori Block for his mate Dorian. You see, Dorian was facing a challenge on-site—running and setting the string line for each course. Although string lines helped, he still had to build up the corner three courses in advance just to secure the line pin into the mortar. Talk about a hassle!
That’s when Bruce and Dorian put their heads together. Bruce tinkered away in his shed, tirelessly fabricating concepts, while Dorian took the product to the field for rigorous testing. It was a true partnership, with each of them bringing their expertise to the table. After some fine-tuning and countless iterations, they finally landed on a product that would go on to become an industry standard—the mighty DORI Block.
